“She was so weak she couldn’t lift her head …”
Earlier this spring, Philadelphia animal control officers responded to an eviction case and found someone small abandoned at the scene. A tan dog named Lexi lay in a pile of blankets in a cramped metal crate. Her ribs poked through her sides, and her eyes gazed vacantly ahead. The officers gently grabbed Lexi and brought her to the Pennsylvania SPCA (PSPCA).

“When Lexi arrived at our shelter, she was barely clinging to life,” the PSPCA wrote in a Facebook post. “She was so weak she couldn’t lift her head, let alone stand.”
Despite the dire circumstances, no one was giving up on Lexi. The PSPCA veterinary team began intensive care. All day, every day, they maintained her fluids and tried to stabilize her body. They watched as their hard work began paying off.

“Lexi is slowly but surely getting stronger!” the PSPCA wrote shortly after the pup’s rescue. “She’s gained a little weight, and for the first time in a long while, she’s been able to go on short walks.”
The determined pup continued surprising everyone with her recovery. It was a slow process, but Lexi was a fighter, and PSPCA veterinary care members happily gave her everything she needed to get better.
Time marched on, and Lexi’s energy only increased.
“Just a few weeks ago, she could barely lift her head,” the PSPCA wrote. “[B]ut now she is walking on her own and is showing an interest in toys.”
It took a little less than a month for Lexi to transform from a feeble, sick dog to a bouncy girl, full of life. PSPCA staff members felt overjoyed to announce that Lexi was available for adoption.
“This brave girl has been through a lot, and she can be a little shy at first,” the rescue wrote. “But with a little time, she becomes the most fun, loving and loyal little pup. Once she knows she can trust you, she gives her entire heart. And it’s a heart that is definitely worth it.”

Adoption applications began pouring in. Families jumped at the chance to welcome Lexi into their homes. Less than a week after she went up for adoption, the PSPCA provided another update — Lexi found her perfect match.
“She’ll remain in the shelter a little while longer until she’s cleared for her spay surgery, but after that, it’s off to her forever home,” the rescue wrote. “We already know she’s going to blossom into the happiest girl, and we can’t wait to watch it happen.”
