The Green Bay Packers are pulling out all the stops in hopes of replacing Jaire Alexander, after releasing him prior to the team’s mandatory minicamp, including trying wide receiver Bo Melton out at cornerback during practice this week.

There might be a more practical, alebit bold, way for general manager Brian Gutekunst and the Packers to add a young and emerging playmaker at cornerback to replace Alexander.

Greg Newsome could be an ideal fit for coordinator Jeff Hafley’s defense, and a top trade target for Gutekunst this summer.

Newsome, 25, still has plenty of upside and shouldn’t be judged for a dreadfully disappointing 2024 campaign for the Browns’ defense as a whole.

The former first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, has pulled down three career interceptions with 155 total tackles, but with a change of scenery and in a defensive scheme that is predicated on strong cornerback play could bring out the best in him as a player.

Pro Football Focus’ Dalton Wasserman suggests that Newsome could be a breakout star to watch across the NFL.

“The idea of Greg Newsome II bouncing back from a rough 2024 season is straightforward,” Wasserman writes for PFF. “He’s played at a higher level for most of his career. His career-low 54.0 coverage grade last year followed a 76.7 mark across his first three seasons. Two key factors in the decline were a career-low three pass breakups and a career-high 24.3% missed tackle rate. Cornerback production is notoriously volatile, and things couldn’t have gone much worse for Cleveland’s secondary in 2024. Newsome’s track record alone makes him a strong bounce-back candidate.”

For the right price, the Packers could be the team to benefit from. Newsome’s potential bounce back, while he fills a suddenly pressing need at a dire situation in the secondary.
