Breaking: MLB heaps high praise on under-the-radar prospect from Jorge Polanco trade

Detroit Tigers v Minnesota Twins

The Jorge Polanco trade gave Minnesota pitchers Justin Topa, Anthony DeSclafani and Darren Bowen along with outfielder Gabriel Gonzalez, who ranked as MLB’s No. 79 prospect in 2024 per MLB Pipeline.

Gonzalez immediately struggled upon joining the Twins, hitting .255/.327/.379 with four home runs and 35 RBIs in 76 games with High-A Cedar Rapids, which led to him dropping out of MLB’s list of top-100 prospects and falling from No. 4 to No. 17 in the Twins’ list of top prospects. However, his performance this year in High-A and Double-A suggests a promotion to Triple-A St. Paul is on the horizon.

MLB suggests this under-the-radar prospect from Jorge Polanco trade could be promoted soon

Gonzalez slashed .319/.378/.529 with five homers and 28 RBIs in 34 games with High-A Cedar Rapids this season before getting promoted to Double-A Wichita. Since his promotion to the Wind Surge, Gonzalez has posted a .323/.402/.430/ slash line in 24 games.

In MLB’s recent article ‘One prospect from each team pushing for a promotion,’ it was suggested that Gonzalez, 21, could potentially be promoted to Triple-A soon. The Twins will likely keep Gonzalez in Double-A for the time being, but if he continues to dominate at the plate, expect to see him in a Saints uniform by the end of the year. MLB Pipeline estimates he will make his major league debut in 2027.

One possible reason for Gonzalez’s struggles last year is the fact that he was dealing with a nagging thumb injury. According to The Gazette’s Jeff Johnson, Gonzalez’s thumb is feeling better this year, which is apparent given his outstanding stats. Before his poor 2024 season, Gonzalez posted an .879 OPS in 2022 in Rookie ball and Low-A and an .837 OPS in 2023 in Low-A and High-A.

Twins set to host National League rival

After going 1-2 against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park, the Minnesota Twins will host the Milwaukee Brewers for a three-game set at Target Field. Game 1 of the series is scheduled to begin at 7:10 p.m. CT on Friday, with the probable starting pitchers being righties Joe Ryan for the Twins and rookie Jacob Misiorowski for the Brewers.
