Tyler Lockett has the connection. Thew new Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer knows him well. Lockett is dependable, smart, and a true pro.
On the surface, it’s a clean plug-and-play veteran addition.
But once you step back and look at the current WR room in Dallas, the fit starts to feel redundant-if not unnecessary.
CeeDee Lamb is obviously locked in. Jalen Tolbert has Dak Prescott’s public endorsement, which might carry more weight than people realize. Jonathan Mingo is a draft capital investment who the Cowboys clearly value more than most. And we know how heavily they’re scouting receivers in the upcoming NFL Draft-so a top 50 rookie WR is a near-certainty.
That’s four roster locks off the bat.
Then there’s KaVontae Turpin, locked in as your return man with gadget upside. That’s five. And that could very well be the final number on the 53-man roster.
They could carry six if they want to, but even still you’ve got numerous guys getting left off the initial 53.
•Ryan Flournoy
•Jalen Brooks
•Jalen Moreno-Cropper
•Tyler Lockett?
Seems like an awful lot of redundancy and “finesse” for a team who’s been preaching the importance of physicality all off-season.
Unless this is strictly one of those “create competition” situations Schottenheimer has pushed, Lockett doesn’t make a ton of sense. If he commands $7–$10M like Spotrac projects, then competition turns into politics real quick.
He’s 33, and while he’d bring leadership … he’s still just Brandin Cooks with a different last name.
And more importantly: he doesn’t move the needle from where the Cowboys were a year ago. Free agency is supposed to be about improving your roster from where it was a year ago, not making it the same.
This offseason isn’t about familiarity or comfort. It’s about difference-makers. Explosive WRs who don’t just separate-they block, they hit, they finish. That’s not exactly Tyler Lockett’s game.
Lockett is a good player and will probably still be productive in the league.
But given that there wasn’t room for Cooks? we say perhaps Lockett’s best spot is not here.
