In a trash-filled pit near a shop in Udaipur, India, a mother dog did everything she could to protect and raise her puppies.
Her only shelter was scattered with broken glass and debris, and one day, she injured her back leg—badly enough to bleed heavily.
Concerned shopkeepers nearby noticed her worsening condition and called Animal Aid Unlimited for help. Despite her pain, the moment she saw the rescue team, the mama dog wagged her tail and pushed herself up to greet them. She seemed to sense they were there to help—not harm.
The team rushed her and her puppies to their shelter. Her injured paw was treated, and for the first time in a while, she and her babies had soft bedding, clean surroundings, and proper care. After days spent resting on jagged surfaces, the comfort of a warm, safe bed must have felt like a miracle.
But the rescue didn’t end there. Knowing that permanent homes are rare for stray dogs in India, Animal Aid decided to improve the spot the mother dog had chosen as home. Volunteers returned to clean the pit, laid down flooring, and added mats to give her and her pups a safe, cleaner place to live.
With her paw healing and her den transformed, the mama dog was brought back to familiar surroundings—this time with fresh bedding, sacks of food, and ongoing support.
