Phillies Tease Big Change After Edmundo Sosa Breakout

Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Edmundo Sosa (33) celebrates his two-RBI double in the dugout with teammates during the seventh inning against the Colorado Rockies at Citizens Bank Park.

The Philadelphia Phillies are flying high to start the 2025 MLB season. Sunday’s 3-2 series-clinching win over the Los Angeles Dodgers improved the Phillies to an NL East-leading 7-2 record, putting them on the right path to more success as a new week begins.

The Phillies’ strong start stems from elite performance from several key players, including Edmundo Sosa. The 29-year-old infielder’s bat has played a big role in his club’s success despite not being an everyday starter, leaving the fanbase clamoring for more opportunities going forward.

Fortunately, it looks like those Sosa supporters might be getting their wish granted sooner rather than later.

Phillies News: Rob Thomson Teases Potential Starting Job for Edmundo Sosa

Following the latest Phillies win, manager Rob Thomson was asked about potentially giving Sosa more starting opportunities. Even though the versatile infielder’s success stems from a small sample size, Philadelphia’s skipper is clearly open to rewarding those efforts.

“We gotta really look at this because, so far, it’s real,” Thomson said about Sosa’s breakout, per 94WIP’s Devan Kaney. “Two hits every game. He’s played great at third, he’s played great at short. He did well out in center field (Saturday). We’ve really gotta get in the lab and try to figure out some stuff to get him in the lineup.”

The 2025 season marks Sosa’s fourth with the Phillies and his third full campaign with the franchise. The veteran right-handed bat began his MLB career with the St. Louis Cardinals until he was traded to Philadelphia in exchange for southpaw JoJo Romero ahead of the 2022 trade deadline.

Sosa has since become an important part of Thomson’s bench plans, however, the former’s breakout season could force the Phillies manager’s hand. Through his first six outings (20 at-bats), Sosa is slashing .550/.571/.750 while recording four doubles, six RBIs, and a walk. He’s also recorded at least two hits in every game he started.

Having said that, it remains to be seen where the Phillies will play Sosa if they want him to start more often. Third baseman Alec Bohm and centerfielder Brandon Marsh are both struggling at the plate this season and Sosa can play both of their positions, making the duo the likeliest candidates to ride the bench.

Thomson has some more time to decide what he’ll do with Sosa. The Phillies are off Monday before beginning a three-game series with the rival Atlanta Braves on Tuesday, meaning fans should have a better idea about the surging infielder’s outlook by then.

In the meantime, Sosa’s electric performance has played a significant role in the Phillies currently owning the third-best 2025 World Series odds (+1000) on FanDuel Sportsbook.
