Right-handed pitcher Tyler Beede, 31, has agreed to a minor league deal with the Minnesota Twins, according to Ari Alexander of KPRC 2. He will report to Triple-A St. Paul.

It looked like Beede was destined to be a superstar when he was drafted in the first round of the 2011 (Toronto Blue Jays) and 2014 (San Francisco Giants) drafts.

Beede didn’t sign with the Blue Jays but agreed to a deal with the Giants, where he was a highly-touted prospect from 2015-18.

However, he struggled upon reaching the major leagues for San Francisco in 2018, allowing seven earned runs, eight walks and nine hits across 7 ⅔ innings in two starts.

The struggles didn’t stop there for Beede, as the former first-rounder pitched to a 5.08 ERA and 5.03 FIP across 117 innings in 2019.

To make matters worse for Beede, he missed the entire 2020 season after receiving Tommy John surgery.

He pitched one inning out of the bullpen for the Giants in 2021 before another six appearances (five earned runs in 9 ⅔ innings) for the team in 2022.

The Giants DFA’d Beede after his six bullpen appearances in 2022, and the Pirates claimed him. In 51 ⅓ innings for the Pirates in 2022, Beede had a 5.23 ERA and 4.89 FIP.

Beede made a stop in Japan in 2023, where he had a 4.08 ERA in 75 innings for the Yomiuri Giants. He returned to Major League Baseball in the 2024 season, giving up 13 earned runs in 14 innings for the Twins’ division rival Cleveland Guardians.

How do the Twins plan to utilize Beede?

Obviously, the Twins hope Beede can make an immediate impact in Triple-A, get the call to the majors, and show why he was a first-round pick.

However, they know that isn’t likely to happen.

The Twins most likely plan to use Beede as a minor-league depth piece who could potentially get a major-league opportunity down the road.

Based on the fates suffered by Randy Dobnak, Darren McCaughan and Scott Blewett, there’s a good chance that Beede will get an eventual opportunity to pitch out of the Twins’ bullpen, eat some innings, and subsequently get DFA’d.
