Breaking News: Ryan Jeffers has first home run of the season overturned after bizarre video review

Minnesota Twins catcher Ryan Jeffers had a home run wiped off the board after a bizarre replay sequence against the Mets.

Nothing has gone right for the Minnesota Twins lately, something punctuated by even a good thing going bad.

In the bottom of the fourth inning of Tuesday’s game against the New York Mets, catcher Ryan Jeffers appeared to hit his first home run of the season and given the Twins a two-run lead.

Third base umpire Adam Hamari signaled that it was a homer, which is why Jeffers rounded the bases in celebration and the graphics at Target Field fired up.

For the first time in what feels like forever, something went the Twins way — until it didn’t.

The way the Mets players in the field reacted to the play was our first indication that something was up, as the ball was relayed into the infield and both Trevor Larnach and Ryan Jeffers were tagged out.

Those outs didn’t really matter in the moment, though, as the chaos of it all caused the umpiring crew to call up New York and review the play.

After giving it a second look, the ball just barely missed going into the left field flower baskets and instead managed to hit the small slab of concrete at the top of the wall padding.

By mere inches, Jeffers missed a home run.

Thankfully the play was ruled dead thanks to all of the confusion and the outs which the Mets could have argued were recorded didn’t count. Larnach went to third and Jeffers was awarded second, but the two runs were wiped off the board.

Minnesota got one of them back thanks to a Fielder’s Choice that Harrison Bader beat out, which at least gave the Twins something out of one of the most bizarre sequences we’ve seen all season.

Nobody lost more than Jeffers, though, who watched his first homer of the season get washed away but here’s to hoping that just motivates him to change that sooner rather than later.
