The Green Bay Packers are well represented in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. With 34 former players enshrined in Canton, only the Chicago Bears (39) have more. This year, one former Packers player, Jahri Evans (who spent most of his career with the New Orleans Saints) is a one of the 15 modern era finalists up for induction.
In addition to Evans, Green Bay also has two men formerly connected to their franchise up for enshrinement after being named among the five senior committee finalists: wide receiver Sterling Sharpe and head coach Mike Holmgren.
Recently, current Hall of Famers Brett Favre and LeRoy Butler used their platforms to campaign for their former teammate, Sharpe, who many believe should have been in the Hall of Fame a long time ago.
Green Bay Packers Legends Brett Favre and LeRoy Butler Want Sterling Sharpe in the Hall of Fame
Both Favre and Butler recently sat down for interviews with TMZ. During both, the Packers legends advocated for their former teammate and urged the senior committee to do the right thing and get him in the Hall of Fame.
“He was not the fastest,” Favre said, “he was not the tallest, but he was by far the smartest — maybe the smartest football player I ever played with. And that’s saying a lot.”
Had Sterling Sharpe played 12, 13 years, he’d be the GOAT. He’d be the best of all-time,” Butler said of Sharpe had his career not been cut short by injuries.
Sterling Sharpe Put Up Great Numbers for the Green Bay Packers
Due to a neck injury suffered at the end of the 1994 season, Sharpe only played seven NFL seasons. In that time, he was a five-time Pro Bowl selection and three-time First Team All-Pro. He had career totals of 595 receptions, 8,134 yards, and 65 touchdowns.
Sharpe led the NFL in receptions three times, receiving yards once, and touchdowns twice. In 1992, he won the wide receiver triple crown by leading the league in all three categories (108 receptions 1,461 yards, 13 touchdowns).
In his final season, Sharpe led the NFL with 18 receiving touchdowns, a Packers single-season record that has only been matched by Davante Adams.
The fact of the matter is that if Terrell Davis, the Denver Broncos Hall of Fame running back who also only played for seven seasons and had a much shorter peak than Sharpe, was inducted into Canton long ago, the Green Bay legend should be in as well.
