Predicting Brian Daboll’s Destination if the Giants Fire Him: PATRIOTS
Giants coach Brian Daboll is likely thinking long and hard about his future this week — even if he refuses to admit it.
That’s because, come Monday, he might find himself jobless because of his abysmal 2023 and 2024 seasons in East Rutherford. Daboll was mum when asked Friday if he had considered the possibility that Sunday’s game vs. the Eagles could be his last with the Giants.
“Yeah, just focused on the things you can control,” Daboll said. “So we’ll focus on coming out here, ending the week on a good note and getting ready to play a game against Philly.”
So, if John Mara does in fact move on from him, where might Daboll find himself next?
He should garner plenty of interest. The 49-year-old coach was a lauded offensive coordinator in Buffalo thanks to his part in the development of quarterback Josh Allen — who might wind up being the league MVP this season.
With Daboll’s potential swan song just one day away, let’s look at three teams that could hire him if he became available this offseason.
New England Patriots
The once-mighty Patriots are a dumpster fire. And while it’s not a lock that they dump coach Jerod Mayo after his first year, some sort of change — like moving on from offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt? — is surely coming. Enter Daboll, who began his NFL coaching career in New England when he was 24 years old. The opportunity to mold Drake Maye, who has drawn comparisons to Allen, might just be the career restart Daboll needs. And hey, if he succeeds in developing Maye and Mayo continues to stink in Year 2, perhaps he could wind up New England’s interim coach in 2025.
Chicago Bears
Caleb Williams was supposed to be a once-in-a-generation prospect. Some scouts viewed him as Patrick Mahomes with better college tape. His results at the NFL level have been… less than stellar. The Bears probably wouldn’t hire Daboll as their head coach — especially with Detroit’s Ben Johnson looming — but adding him as their OC could get Williams’ development path back on course (and bolster his coaching resume).
Buffalo Bills
I mean, it worked out well the first time, right? Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady is sure to draw head coaching interest this spring.
He was Joe Burrow’s pass-game coordinator in college and, like Daboll, he has proven to be successful with Allen as his QB. Point being: If Buffalo loses him, perhaps a reunion with Daboll, who still has a great relationship with Allen, would make sense.
