The Green Bay Packers are 11-5 on the season following their Week 17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, who are now 14-2. The loss means that Green Bay no longer is guaranteed the sixth seed in the NFL Playoffs. Even if they defeat the Chicago Bears next week, a Washington Commanders win over the Dallas Cowboys in Week 18 would give them the sixth seed and drop the Packers to seventh.
That would mean that Green Bay would travel to Pennsylvania to face the Philadelphia Eagles in a Week One rematch in the Wild Card round. Interestingly, this is something that one Eagles reporter hopes his team can avoid.
The Green Bay Packers Could Not Overcome a Slow Start vs the Minnesota Vikings
The Packers have lost five games this season, all of them coming at the hands of the Eagles, Lions, and Vikings. They have lost these games by an average of 4.2 points per game.
In most of these contests, the offense got off to a slow start, or killed early drives with turnovers.
In Week One, Green Bay’s offense actually got off to a fast start, but a Jordan Love interception in the second quarter shifted momentum. Week Four’s loss to the Vikings saw the Packers turn the ball over four times: a Tucker Kraft fumble and three Jordan Love interceptions. Brayden Narveson also missed two field goals in the first half.
The first half of their first loss to the Lions saw Jordan Love throw a pick-six in the first half while Green Bay stalled on offense time and time again. Their second loss to the Lions saw Christian Watson fumble a ball late in the first quarter, again stalling the offense.
In Week 17 against the Vikings, it was a Josh Jacobs fumble that cost the Packers and kept the offense from finding a groove.
Green Bay Packers Running Back Josh Jacobs Blames Himself for Team’s Slow Start
According to Zachary Jacobson of Packer Report, Jacobs took responsibility for the team’s slow start in their latest loss, citing his fumble for the reason why the offense could not get going:
“I feel like it drained the energy out of the team just starting early,” Jacobs said of his fumble. “One of them plays. I feel like I said it earlier in the week, I take it personally getting the team to start fast. That’s on me.”
The Packers will take on the Bears in their final meeting of the 2024 NFL regular season before the playoffs begin. Hopefully Jacobs and the Packers can fix their mistakes before it is too late.
