The 2025 NFL Draft was an exciting one for the Patriots, given how much help their roster needed, and the past few classes haven’t yielded nearly as many stars as the organization hoped for.
They landed in the top-5 picks again, fortunately and unfortunately, which gave them a great opportunity to secure one of the best talents of the incoming class.
Although it has been the result of back to back 4-13 seasons, it allowed them to draft their next franchise quarterback, Drake Maye, and left tackle, Will Campbell.
The hope is they won’t have a top-10 pick next year, as there is a lot of optimism they will have a much improved season under Mike Vrabel.
However, in a new mock draft, they are projected to hold pick No. 8, which lands them their newest wide receiver, Arizona State’s Jordyn Tyson.
That might be the only positive aspect of potentially not having as good a season as many hope for.
The latest mock draft has the Patriots continuing to build a high-powered offense around Drake Maye
The offense was the clear priority during this year’s NFL Draft, as the Patriots didn’t take a defensive player until Round 4.
They added Maye’s left tackle protection with Campbell, an explosive running back with TreVeyon Henderson, and his WR1 of the future with Kyle Williams.
But that doesn’t mean they should focus their early draft efforts on the defense next year, especially when a player like Tyson is available.
That’s why ESPN’s Matt Miller believes he would be the right pick for what New England is trying to build, especially when considering Maye’s future.
“Upside is intriguing when devising summer mock drafts, and Tyson has the potential to rise into the top 10. At 6-foot-1, 195 pounds, he reminds me of Jaxon Smith-Njigba with his route-running ability and poise in space while effortlessly moving through a route tree. Tyson broke out in 2024, catching 75 passes for 1,101 yards and 10 touchdowns. But drops are a problem, with eight coming on 114 targets. If he cleans that up, Tyson has the speed and route technique to be a top-10 pick and a prime target for young Patriots QB Drake Maye, who has shown franchise potential.”
If Seahawks receiver Jaxson Smith-Njigba is a legitimate comp for Tyson, who was a player the Patriots were interested in during the 2023 draft, then he will fit right into what they are trying to build on offense.
On top of that, adding another receiver to the roster is exactly what the team needs next year, as Stefon Diggs is not thought to be a long-term solution.
Williams is expected to slide into that WR1 role at some point, but who will surround him is still in question. The assumption is that DeMario Douglas will be right there with him, but beyond that, the receiving corps is far from certain going into training camp later this month.
That makes a smooth route runner like Tyson a fantastic weapon for Maye to work with.
His 2024 season proves he has a skillset they could use in New England, especially on the six-game run he put together by recording 50 receptions for 732 yards and six touchdowns during that stretch.
Tyson has displayed all the characteristics that Mike Vrabel loves in any player on a team he coaches, but the receiver’s “angry runs” after the catch might be what the coach will appreciate the most.
