Patriots Rookie May Be an Upgrade Over Departed Veteran WR

In 2024, the New England Patriots’ wide receivers struggled to get open and help rookie quarterback Drake Maye. As a result, the Patriots added some much-needed talent to the WR room this offseason. New England signed veteran Stefon Diggs and drafted former University of Washington State receiver Kyle Williams.

While Diggs was only present for mandatory minicamp this spring, Williams took advantage and showed what he could do during OTAs and minicamp. That said, New England saw another receiver put together an impressive spring. Undrafted free agent Efton Chism III showed why he has a real shot at making the Patriots roster.

If he is able to accomplish that, Chism could be part of the replacement plan for K.J. Osborn, who left this offseason to join the Washington Commanders.

Efton Chism III Is Making a Case to Be a Patriot in 2025

Chism attended the University of Eastern Washington from 2020-2024. During those four seasons, he recorded 346 receptions for 3,852 yards and 37 touchdowns. Furthermore, Chism broke Cooper Kupp’s school reception record during his senior season, catching 120 passes.

The 23-year-old was able to accomplish this not because of his speed, but his route-running ability. Chism once again put that ability on display during training camp, running some masterful routes.

Despite Chism lacking elite speed, his route-running ability could find him success in the slot like Kupp. Although Osborn and Chism will likely not play the same position, since Osborn was more of an outside receiver with the Patriots, Chism’s potential upside could be higher than what Osborn provided.

Moreover, the Patriots have had success developing late-round/undrafted receivers. Julian Edelman, who was selected in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL Draft, became one of the better slot receivers during his time.

Given Chism’s early performance, New England’s wide receiver room seems to be in a better spot this year than it was last season, which should excite Patriots fans.
