The Dallas Cowboys will enter training camp later this summer with a lot of uncertainty around their cornerback position. The group was one of the most banged-up units across the entire NFL, and many of those setbacks are still affecting the team’s depth today.
Ideally, an All-Pro tandem of Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland headlines the Cowboys‘ boundary cornerback positions, but the duo only played one game together last season as they each dealt with injuries.
Diggs’ blow came at the end of the season, and his surgery timeline has him missing the beginning of the 2025 season. Dallas also drafted a cornerback in Shavon Revel Jr. in the third round … but the rookie may miss some time as he’s rehabbing his own knee.
Bland is expected to be ready to go for Week 1, likely starting opposite of Kaiir Elam, the former first-round pick acquired in a trade after a sub-par start to his career on the Buffalo Bills.
The former 2022 fifth-round pick Bland, who set an NFL record with five pick sixes in 2023, is Dallas’ saving grace at the position as of right now.
In spite of all of this, one site believes he could get at least mentioned in trade talks out of fear of his upcoming contract extension. Pro Football Network believes the Atlanta Falcons, who are desperate for any defensive help they can get, should target Bland the hardest in a summertime trade.
The argument that Atlanta should shop for a cornerback is valid – it is the one position left unaddressed from last season’s defense that ranked 25th in pass defense success.
But suggesting Bland could get traded away from Dallas is preposterous.
Yes, he is in line to receive a new contract that could, deservedly, approach $95 million in total … but the Cowboys will be more worried about the depth of the unit rather than Bland’s eventual lump sum at the moment.
Diggs’ injury history since signing his massive deal could cause concern of a repeat with Bland, but Dallas can’t afford to be shipping off proven talents with the depth issues they are currently facing.
The financial situation will play itself out next offseason, and of all the players’ in line for a new contract, Bland is probably at the top of the “keep” list anyway. Even if the projected amount mirrors what Diggs got.
Regarding this season, Bland is both the Cowboys’ healthiest and the most reliable cornerback available.
He’s not going anywhere.
