“My heart absolutely broke.”
Earlier this month, Uber driver Kaytleen Roberson was transporting a passenger through Lamar County, Mississippi, when she noticed a desperate face on the side of the road. Roberson and the passenger decided they had to stop. Pulling over, the pair locked eyes with a helpless puppy abandoned inside a small crate.
“I immediately felt sad,” Roberson told WDAM 7. “I just wanted to get [her] help.”
Roberson posted a photo of the pup to Facebook, hoping to connect with a rescue organization. When Hub City Humane Society shelter director Tamara Huff saw the post, she knew she had to do something.
“My heart absolutely broke,” Huff told The Dodo. “I responded with, ‘That baby can come to Hub City.’”

Safe at the shelter, the puppy, now named Rocky Road, did her best to adjust.
“Initially, Rocky Road was very fearful and untrusting,” Huff said. “She was trembling all over and would cower in the back of her wire kennel when the staff approached her.”

With lots of patience and even more treats, Rocky Road began trusting the shelter staff members and even started wagging her tail. A week later, the pup has completely transformed.
“She is such a character!” Huff said. “She is very animated with her facial expressions and her stomps. She absolutely loves to be loved and is very affectionate. She loves to play with her toys and to cuddle in laps.”

Rocky Road is still preparing to meet her forever family, but rescuers know that it won’t be long before she finds where she’s meant to be.
“Her future looks bright and happy!” Huff said.
