“She claws at the kennel door, desperate to get out and back into a loving home.”
Mishi and her dad had been together since she was just a tiny puppy. He was her best friend and would do anything for her — so when he was evicted and facing homelessness, he unfortunately knew what he had to do.
13-year-old Mishi walked three miles to Anita’s Stevens Swan Humane Society with her dad by her side. When they arrived, he made the heartbreaking decision to surrender her so she could have a better future than he could give her. He did what he had to do to keep Mishi safe — but unfortunately, he couldn’t explain that to Mishi.

“When the owner left, Mishi was screaming and crying,” Melissa DeMartino of Anita’s Stevens Swan Humane Society told The Dodo. “She has been distraught for days.”
Mishi’s dad left in tears, and the shelter staff immediately sprang into action to make Mishi feel as safe and secure as possible in her new environment. The staff could immediately tell what a sweet and loving girl she was, but the stress of losing the only home she’d ever known was weighing down on her.

“We have made Mishi as comfortable as we can with big fluffy blankets, fresh water, food, toys, and as much loving interaction as possible,” the shelter wrote on Facebook. “But when she is placed back into a kennel, her cries cannot be silenced. It’s a reality so different from anything she has ever known — she claws at the kennel door, desperate to get out and back into a loving home.”
Mishi misses her dad so much, and every time she goes outside, she tries to walk toward the road where she last saw him. She does have her happy moments, though, and those are whenever she is around people who are willing to give her love and attention. That’s what Mishi truly wants and needs right now: a welcoming home with people who will love her.

“Mishi seems to be good in any home where there are people around so she can get the attention she deserves,” DeMartino said.
Mishi misses her dad so much, and all she wants now is to find her forever home.
