LOS ANGELES — After the Dodgers’ Tuesday night loss to the A’s at Dodger Stadium, most of manager Dave Roberts’ postgame session was about Roki Sasaki, who was placed on the injured list 46 minutes before the game.
Sasaki first informed the Dodgers of soreness in his shoulder after his start last Friday in Arizona, but said he felt discomfort over the previous few weeks. An MRI on Sasaki showed an impingement in his right shoulder, Roberts said, It’s similar to what Sasaki dealt with last season in Japan with Chiba Lotte.
As of now there’s no timetable for the right-hander’s return to the mound.
“With that information — as benign as it is, fortunately — and where he’s at, we felt, as we’ve done with most of our pitchers, potentially all of our pitchers, is to err on the side of caution,” Roberts said.
What that means for now is rest and no throwing for Sasaki, but for how long remains to be seen.
“Getting him offline right now, getting stronger, getting the foundation, obviously letting his shoulder calm down, so where not affecting anything going forward, that’s kind of the goal,” Roberts added, “If we could do that, then continue to work on the mechanics, because obviously — knowing what we do now — there was some compensation from him, and his delivery was probably compromised. All that is because he wanted to complete, and help us out.”
In the immediate future, Sasaki was originally scheduled to start on Thursday, but Roberts said that would likely be a bullpen game in the series finale against the A’s, depending on how pitcher usage goes on Wednesday. Roberts also said Landon Knack will continue to get a runway in the Dodgers rotation, which for right now consists of Yoshiinobu Yamamoto, Tony Gonsolin, Dustin May, and Knack. Clayton Kershaw will join the group on Saturday.
Michael Kopech, who is two appearances into his minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City, has been on the injured list all season with a right shoulder impingement. His 60th day on the IL is this Friday. Roberts was asked if Sasaki would face a similar down period.
“I don’t want to speculate about him versus Kopech. But I made it very clear to Roki that there’s no expectation on the timeline,” Roberts said. “The main thing is that when he’s healthy he’s strong, his delivery feels good, then he’ll pitch for us.”
