Steelers are chasing the wrong ex-Packers WR to pair with Aaron Rodgers

Find someone who loves you the way Aaron Rodgers loves his former Green Bay Packers wide receivers. Granted, nobody said that while he, you know, actually played with them in Green Bay, but that’s beside the point.

Rodgers reunited the band with the New York Jets, bringing Allen Lazard, Randall Cobb, and eventually Davante Adams with him.

All signs still point toward Rodgers joining the Pittsburgh Steelers, but don’t just take my word for it. The Steelers have assembled a squad ready for a four-time MVP.

Sure, that included trading George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys, but the Steelers have rumored interest in quickly remedying that by trading for one of Rodgers’ favorites. The problem? They’re targeting the wrong former Packers receiver.

According to Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk, the Steelers are “in play” to trade for Allen Lazard. In the year 2025, you ask? I know.

In reality, Romeo Doubs should be at the top of the list.

Steelers trading for Packers’ Romeo Doubs makes far more sense than targeting Allen Lazard

Lazard attempted to shut down the rumors with a not-so-subtle tweet, but let’s be honest, he doesn’t have much say in this. What Aaron Rodgers wants, Aaron Rodgers gets, and if that includes one Allen Lazard, who’s going to say no?

It certainly won’t be the Jets.

If the Steelers want to add a pass-catcher who not only has experience with Rodgers but also meets their need for a new WR2, look no further than Doubs. Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated pointed out that Rodgers was “very fond” of Doubs during their time together in Green Bay.

And rightly so. Doubs is a reliable possession wide receiver who makes wow catches look easy. With DK Metcalf dominating coverage, Doubs could become Rodgers’ go-to target in the intermediate passing game.

The Packers should, and presumably would, listen to offers. They need to trim a crowded wide receiver room, especially when Christian Watson returns.

Doubs’ target share will likely decrease after Green Bay added Matthew Golden in the first round and Savion Williams in the third. Jayden Reed and Tucker Kraft will continue to dominate targets, and we’re still waiting for Dontayvion Wicks to turn his Pro Bowl potential into production.

Doubs’ rookie contract expires next year, so it would make sense to make a trade now to add more draft capital. The Packers likely won’t receive any compensatory picks next year. A trade is the only realistic way to land more selections.

Rodgers needs another former Packers receiver. Before Lazard, the Steelers should target Doubs.
