Following All-Pro Zack Martin’s retirement this offseason, the Dallas Cowboys will need more leadership from veterans on the offensive line, namely Terrence Steele and Tyler Smith.
Steele and Smith will lead an offensive line that hopes to have a bounce-back season after being plagued by injuries and inconsistency last year.
The pair spoke with the media following their at-bats during the team’s 12th annual Reliant Home Run Derby about how the Cowboys move on without Martin and what they learned from him.
“We just continue the culture. I mean, we were fortunate enough to have two dudes who did it at a high level for a really long time, or super consistent in everything they did, and I learned a lot from them,” said Smith. “I learned how Zach took notes. I learned how Zack practiced, how he took care of his body. So I think it’s my job to pass that on to the young dudes. Definitely show them every day the right way to do things, and I know [Steele] and me, and the rest of the guys in there, even will continue to uphold that standard.”
Steele, who played five seasons next to Martin, echoed Smith’s sentiments, thanking the Notre Dame product for his mentorship and leadership.
“Really tough. …Zack was my guy. Took me under his wing, right when I got in. Showed me the ropes, showed me what it takes to be great, the mindset, hard work, and all that. So it’s gonna be tough. It’s already been an adjustment right now,” said Steele.
Smith has upheld Martin’s standard throughout his young career, earning two Pro Bowl and All-Pro selections over his first three seasons.
Former Cowboy left tackle Tyron Smith said he knew the Tulsa product would be the next great Cowboys lineman at his retirement ceremony.
Tyler Smith said because Tyron Smith is not a man of many words, his comment was special.
“It’s an honor, the time I got to play with [Martin and Smith], the lessons I learned from those guys, and even just hearing how they hold me in high regard. Like, I mean, it’s crazy for me,” said Tyler Smith. “I grew up watching those guys, like, you know, I’m on 24 so, you know, it’s crazy, but you know, I got to continue the culture. You know, the standard is still the standard and we got big dreams this off-season we need that Lombardi trophy.”
