The Dallas Cowboys were widely expected to select a quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft.
That was until they struck a trade with the New England Patriots for Joe Milton, who tantalized football fans with an electric performance in the Week 18 finale last season.
While a meaningless game, Milton’s upside was on full display. He has a cannon for a right arm and an unteachable ability to navigate a collapsing pocket.
He can pick up yards on the ground when it’s called for, but he prefers to drop back and throw lasers around the gridiron.
Having said that, Brian Schottenheimer and Co. will have their work cut out to mold Milton into a competent backup.
While Milton has all the tools necessary to reach that level, his timing and overall touch on his passes have a lot of room for improvement.
With Will Grier also on the roster, many thought the team was done adding to its QB room. Well, it would appear Dallas is still doing its due diligence on this year’s class.
Cowboys meet with Montana State QB Tommy Mellott before NFL Draft
According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the Cowboys have met with Montana State product Tommy Mellott. Pelissero notes that Mellott won the Walter Payton Award last season, which is given to the most outstanding offensive player in the NCAA.
A terrific athlete who possesses dual-threat ability, Mellott did wide receiver and punt return drills at his Pro Day.
He also ran a blistering 4.39 40-yard dash and jumped a 41-inch (!) vertical. That would have shattered the all-time quarterback vertical record at the NFL Combine.
Longtime draft analyst Todd McShay has talked to multiple teams that view Mellott as a Julian Edelman conversion project.
Edelman was a quarterback at Kent State before converting to wide receiver in the NFL. He went on to win a Super Bowl MVP and rank top five in Patriots history in catches and receiving yards. Suffice it to say it was a successful conversion.
McShay expects Mellott to get drafted in the sixth or seventh round, though it is also possible he goes undrafted.
Mellott’s stock is on the rise following his jaw-dropping Pro Day. It stands to reason that several teams, not just Dallas, will be champing at the bit to sign the former Bobcat if he doesn’t hear his name called.
Odds are the Cowboys don’t view Mellott as an NFL quarterback. However, the similarities to Edelman are too apparent to ignore.
The Montana State product could be a late-round steal and he’s firmly on Jerry Jones’ radar after working out for Dallas in person.
