FRISCO – The Dallas Cowboys’ 2024 season had already begun to unravel heading into their Week 9 contest against the Atlanta Falcons. Things would only go from bad to worse.
Amid early injury problems on the defensive side, the Cowboys could take solace in quarterback Dak Prescott being at the helm of the offense… until he wasn’t.
Midway through that game, Prescott suffered a hamstring injury, proving serious enough to end his season right there. And with it, any hopes of the Cowboys salvaging that campaign vanquished. Flash forward to spring where Prescott is nearing a return to football activities, easing his way back onto the field.
“I’m getting close to where I want to be,” Prescott said last week. “I don’t want to put a percentage on it.
I know we got team activities coming up. I imagine myself being involved in some sort, if not all.
Then again, understanding my age and what I’ve been through, it’s about being ready for the fall. I’m not rushing anything, but I’m where I want to be.” Understandable right?
A veteran quarterback with an admitted injury history at this point just looking to make sure all systems are ready for a big 2025 season.
However, Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio has raised an eyebrow, expressing concern with this return timeline.
“It’s a hamstring injury. Not a torn ACL. Not a ruptured Achilles tendon. Which suggests it was a serious hamstring injury.”
That severity has never been denied. Dallas shut down Prescott for the season, hopefully negating any chance of aggravating that injury again.
“Beyond the fact that the recovery, as hamstring injuries go, was a long one is the question of whether it could happen again, absent major changes to his process for throwing the ball.”
But, again: Does PFT not know this injury isn’t “just a hamstring”? CowboysCountry.com and elsewhere has written dozens of times that surgery was necessary because “the hamstring was torn off the bone.” ‘Maybe it was more than just a hamstring injury.’ You think? April 14, 2025 Rather than overanalyzing this timeline, perhaps both the Cowboys and Prescott are being thorough here. Given the time of the injury, there has not been a need for Prescott to ramp things up and get into football shape.
If there are concerns about Prescott keeping his form after a serious injury, one should look no further that the three year stretch before 2024 where the Cowboys quarterback played arguably some of the best football of his career. This time it is certainly different.
Short term or long term, hamstring injuries can still be tricky.
Add in the major changes with Brian Schottenheimer taking over the offense and there is even more complexity to Prescott’s return.
But unless there is some serious setback, Cowboys Nation should not have much fear about their quarterback’s recovery process.
