A bases-loaded, two-run double in the bottom of the ninth sunk the Chicago White Sox chances of snapping their losing streak. Instead, they were walked off by the Detroit Tigers and swept in the three-game series.
Martín Pérez followed up his stellar season debut with another solid performance. The veteran lefty tossed 6 1/3 innings, allowing one run on four hits and two walks, while fanning four. But five relievers struggled to retire Tigers hitters for the remainder of the game.
An Early Spark
The White Sox put two runs on the board in the first inning. Leadoff man Mike Tauchman — activated from the injured list earlier in the day — singled to open the game, and Luis Robert Jr. followed with a walk.
After Andrew Benintendi grounded into a fielder’s choice, Tauchman advanced to third. Andrew Vaughn’s base hit scored Tauchman, and an error by right fielder Manuel Margot allowed Benintendi to reach third base. Matt Thaiss’s sacrifice fly to center plated Benintendi.
The South Siders added a third run in the top of the fourth. Vaughn reached on an infield single, and Miguel Vargas followed with a walk. Manager Will Venable went conservative, calling for a Brooks Baldwin sacrifice bunt to move the runners over. Jacob Amaya then flew out to right to score Vaughn with what would be the White Sox last run of the day. The club only reached base twice over the remainder of the game.
Trouble In Traffic
Pérez recorded the first out of the seventh, getting Kerry Carpenter to ground out on the first pitch. Mike Clevinger relieved him and gave up a single to Javier Báez, who drove in Detroit’s first run and finished with three hits, before walking the next two batters. Fortunately, Cam Booser entered and struck out Riley Greene to escape the jam.
Chicago’s bullpen danced with danger again in the eighth. This time, reliever Penn Murfee allowed an infield single to Andy Ibáñez and walked Colt Keith. Dillon Dingler flew out after Spencer Torkelson grounded into a fielder’s choice, cutting down the lead runner. Venable called on Frasier Ellard, who got the final out.
Unglued
Báez led off with a single off Ellard, who got Zach McKinstry to ground into a fielder’s choice. But the lefty walked the next two hitters, loading the bases before giving way to Jordan Leasure. Leasure walked in a run, and on his second pitch to Torkelson, the Tigers’ first baseman ripped a double to left to score the tying and winning runs for the walk-off.
News and Notes
Andrew Benintendi pulled up lame on Thaiss’s sacrifice fly in the first inning. Nick Maton pinch hit for him in the fifth, and Benintendi later exited with left adductor tightness. He is listed as day-to-day.
Tauchman made an impact in his season debut, finishing 1-for-3 with a single, a walk, a run scored, and a nice catch in right field.
What’s On Tap Next?
