Trade Update: Patriots Head Coach Mike Vrabel Hints at Joe Milton Trade Before NFL Draft

The New England Patriots are in an envious situation when it comes to the quarterback position.

They selected phenom quarterback Drake Maye with the third overall pick in the NFL draft last year and also drafted a potential steal in Joe Milton in the sixth round.

Given Milton showed promise in limited game time, he is drawing interest from other teams, especially with Maye entrenched as the starter for next season and beyond.

The question is more a matter of when rather than if, especially with the Patriots signing veteran backup Joshua Dobbs. Mike Vrabel added some fuel to the fire with some comments when being interviewed at the NFL meetings.

“He was ready for his opportunity there late in the season which I commend him on… where that leads to, we’ll see as the draft approaches or where Joe is on April 7th to start our offseason program,” he said.

What that indicates is the team is certainly fielding offers for the young quarterback out of Tennessee.

As the draft approaches, teams in need of a young quarterback will be more aggressive in trying to acquire if they feel the guy they want won’t fall to them.

No matter how trade talks go with other teams, the Patriots are in a good spot with Milton. Worst case, they keep him as a talented young back who can develop and grow along Maye, best case they get a significant haul for a quarterback they took in the sixth round.

If the Patriots wait until draft night to trade Milton, the price could become even higher, as maybe a team like the New York Giants who wants Shedeur Sanders but might not get him at pick three suddenly has extra interest.

Among the top prospects, Travis Hunter seems like the obvious fit for the Patriots, so maybe the team can even use Milton as fuel to try and trade up a spot or two to ensure they get their guy.

While as of now Milton remains on the team, it seems more and more likely he gets traded as the draft approaches.

If he were to be traded, it would be bittersweet for Patriots fans, as Milton was fun to watch when he played, but he also won the final game of the season, hurting the team’s draft position.
