Yankees make final cut; Here’s Opening Day roster … if they don’t add a bat

Yerry De Los Santos

On Opening Day eve, the Yankees made one last bullpen decision Wednesday by picking left-hander Brent Headrick and rookie right-hander Yoendrys Gomez over veteran righty Yerry De Los Santos to be part of their 26-man season-opening roster.

If the Yankees don’t make another move prior to Thursday’s 3:05 p.m., game at Yankee Stadium against the Milwaukee Brewers, infielder/outfielder Pablo Reyes will be added to the 40-man roster and make the club.

The Yankees, however, have been on a hunt for an outside-the-organization upgrade for their bench, perhaps for a right-handed bat to get some of injured DH Giancarlo Stanton’s at-bats.

The Yankees trimmed to roster to 26 on Wednesday by optioning De Los Santos to Triple-A and placing eight players on the injured list.

Six right-handed pitchers were added to the 15-day IL:

Starters Clarke Schmidt (right rotator cuff tendonitis) and JT Brubaker (left rib fractures), and relievers Clayton Beeter (right shoulder impingement syndrome), Scott Effross (left hamstring strain), Ian Hamilton (viral illness) and Jonathan Loaisiga (right elbow surgery recovery).

Also added to the 10-day IL were two position players:

Infielder DJ LeMahieu (left calf strain) and designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton (right and left elbow epicondylitis).

Within the last week, the Yankees also placed two other starting pitchers on the 60-day IL, right-handers Gerrit Cole (Tommy John surgery) and Luis Gil (right lat strain).

All of the stints were backdated three days from the season opener to March 24.

Reliever Jake Cousins’ IL stint wasn’t announced, but the righty didn’t appear in any spring games due to a forearm strain and won’t be ready for the start of the season.

Gomez making the Opening Day roster was no surprise because he worked 11.1 scoreless innings over seven Grapefruit League outings with nine strikeouts and four walks.

De Los Santos (1.93 ERA, 9.1 IP, 9 K, 6 BB) lost out despite having a much better spring ERA than Headrick, 1.93 to 5.40. De Los Santos, however, walked six while fanning nine over 9.1 innings in eight games while Headrick struck out 18 and walked seven in 11.2 innings over seven appearances.
