On the final day of Spring Training, Matt Strahm nearly had a freak accident derail his return to the Philadelphia Phillies bullpen.
Fortunately for Philly, their top reliever from last season didn’t hurt himself badly while packing for the return trip to PA. The team told reporters that Strahm injured his left middle finger nail, which, while not sounding serious, could have caused an issue for the pitcher’s grip on baseballs.
Matt Gelb of The Athletic said that Strahm, who was supposed to pitch in the spring finale on Monday, will instead throw a bullpen session once he and the rest of the team arrive in Philadelphia on Tuesday.

Strahm had been dealing with shoulder inflammation in his throwing arm earlier this month, though it had calmed down enough that he was set to suit up for Opening Day. He has not pitched since March 5th.
Last year, Strahm posted a 1.87 ERA while striking out 79 hitters in 62.2 innings. The first-time All-Star operated as one of Philly’s chief setup men, and he will be leaned on even harder in that role now with Jeff Hoffman gone north to the Toronto Blue Jays.
Strahm is one of three left-handed pitchers in Philly’s pen, along with José Alvarado and Tanner Banks.
The Phillies will certainly take the good news on Strahm while another one of their pitchers, Ranger Suárez, will be placed on the injured list to begin the season. Suárez will be replaced by Taijuan Walker in the starting rotation.
Opening Day is this Thursday, March 27 at the Washington Nationals. First pitch is scheduled for 4pm, with Zack Wheeler set to face the Nats’ MacKenzie Gore.
