The New England Patriots came into the NFL offseason badly needing help at the wide receiver position.
Last year, quarterback Drake Maye took over as the starting quarterback as a rookie. He looked good throughout his first NFL season, but there was a clear need for more weapons.
Maye completed 66.6% of his passes for 2,276 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions, while also rushing for 421 yards and two scores on the ground.
It was expected that the Patriots would land a top-tier wideout. That didn’t end up happening.
Now, they are still in a position of need at wide receiver. One intriguing name was brought in for a visit in the last week. Stefon Diggs took a visit with New England, but no deal was completed at the time.
Could the Patriots end up signing Diggs? One team insider believes that they should take a chance on him.
Mike Giardi of the Boston Sports Journal sees the value of signing him and seeing what happens.
“But seems like it’s worth a dice roll at this point,” Giardi said. “Just based on, ‘This is our room, we got problems’. And if he can be 85% to 90% of what he was before the injury, at some point during the season, then that’s our best receiver. Period. End of story.”

Diggs is coming off of a torn ACL that he suffered after playing just eight games with the Houston Texans in 2024. In those eight games, the 31-year-old wideout caught 47 passes for 496 yards and three touchdowns.
