New head coach Brian Schottenheimer and the Dallas Cowboys have options with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
It seemed like the Cowboys would potentially take a running back in the first round after releasing Ezekiel Elliot and Rico Dowdle departing in free agency. That void has been addressed, though, by signing free agents Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders.
Those signings open the door for Schottenheimer and Jerry Jones to bolster another position.
The offense is slated to return star quarterback Dak Prescott and All-Pro wide receiver Ceedee Lamb. While that connection has been lethal at times, receiver play behind Lamb has fallen off considerably.
Lamb led the next closest Dallas wideout (Jalen Tolbert) by 52 receptions last season with tight end Jake Ferguson finishing second on the team in receptions with 59.
According to a new NFL mock draft from CBS Sports’ Josh Edwards, the Cowboys take some pressure off Lamb and provide another talented target to Prescott by taking combine standout receiver Matthew Golden at No. 12 overall.
“Dallas has lacked a second wide receiver who can command the opposition’s attention since Amari Cooper was traded,” Edwards wrote. “Matthew Golden would take some of the pressure off CeeDee Lamb.”
Golden (5-foot-11, 191 pounds) put together a career-year with the Texas Longhorns in 2024. The former Houston transfer caught 58 passes for 987 yards with nine touchdowns, all career-highs.
Adding to his stock, Golden tested highly at the combine in Indianapolis last month, finishing second among all prospects with a 4.29 40-yard dash and a 10-yard split that tied for first (1.49).
The 2025 NFL Draft will take place from April 24-26 in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
