Green Bay Packers: Former 6th Round Pick Breaks Silence On New Contract

While other NFL teams are working on restructuring their rosters via trades, the Green Bay Packers are making sure that they hold on to players that they feel are important to them competing in 2025 and beyond. Of course, the time will come for them to sign free agents and whatnot, but they are able to ensure that they do not overspend by retaining some of the key contributors that they already have.

Earlier this week, it was reported that Green Bay had tendered contracts to six exclusive rights free agents, among them running back Emanuel Wilson and wide receiver Bo Melton.

And even before that, reports came out that the Packers had re-signed former sixth round pick Isaiah McDuffie to a two-year contract.

Isaiah McDuffie Has Been an Underrated Cog in the Green Bay Packers Defense

Green Bay Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander (23) celebrates with linebacker Isaiah McDuffie (58) after McDuffie breaks up a pass against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, September 15, 2024, at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wis. The Packers won the game, 16-10.

McDuffie became the first player from Green Bay’s 2021 NFL Draft class to get a second contract with the team. And if the Packers are unable or choose not to bring back center Josh Myers, he end up being the only one. Their entire draft class that year consisted of the following players:

  • Eric Stokes
  • Josh Myers
  • Amari Rodgers
  • Royce Newman
  • TJ Slaton
  • Shemar Jean-Charles
  • Cole Van Lanen
  • Isaiah McDuffie
  • Kylin Hill

Needless to say, it was not Brian Gutekunst’s best haul.

But McDuffie has been a much better player than anyone predicted he would be. Since joining the Packers, he has missed just five games in four years, and just one in the last three.

Last season, he started all 17 games while registering three passes defended, a forced fumble, 0.5 sacks, and 97 tackles.

Obviously, Green Bay had no intention of losing that level of production.

Green Bay Packers Linebacker Isaiah McDuffie Praises the Organization

According to Matt Schneidman of The Athletic, McDuffie had no real intention of trying to play somewhere else. He wanted to stay with the Packers:

“Yeah, it’s just an awesome feeling. All the hard work getting rewarded in that way just feels awesome for me and my family. It’s just a lot of excitement and it’s at the place I want to be. So I’m just real happy about it.

“The guys in the locker room, just the organization as a whole, I feel like they do everything professionally and getting a chance to play at Lambeau Field again, I feel that’s such a historic stadium and just organization in general. Again, I just love the organization and they drafted me, so just from that standpoint also, so I’m just happy everything worked out.”

McDuffie, of course, played for Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley during his days at Boston College. It is no surprise, then, that he thrived in Hafley’s system, and it will be interesting to see if he can continue to increase his production in Year Two of his former college coach’s regime on defense.
