It doesn’t look like it would cost the Steelers much to retain Fields
The Pittsburgh Steelers could look to re-sign Justin Fields before free agency kicks off next week.
And the good news is it doesn’t seem like it would cost the Steelers too much to bring Fields back as their quarterback.
Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer predicted that Fields has a chance to “get a deal like Sam Darnold got with the Minnesota Vikings last year.” Darnold signed a one-year deal worth up to $10 million with the Vikings and it proved to be a shrewd move by Minnesota with Darnold outperforming his contract by notching his first Pro Bowl season.
Fields might not bring the same production, but he could be good value at that price.
“Speaking of the Steelers, this is, of course, a big week for Pittsburgh to try to get Justin Fields re-signed,” Breer wrote. “He’ll have options elsewhere — one team would be the New York Jets, and I wouldn’t be stunned to see Indy throw its hat in the ring — if he gets to the market.”
Fields not commanding a massive price tag also benefits the Steelers if they want to bring in another veteran quarterback in free agency. They have been linked to several already this offseason, including Aaron Rodgers and Jameis Winston. The Steelers signing a veteran to go along with Fields could allow them to create a quarterback competition in camp before assigning a starter before the start of next season.
Regardless, the Steelers have many big decisions to make in the very near future.
