Green Bay, we have a problem.
For the last two months, I’ve blindly believed that the Packers were going to bring Davante Adams back. Things in New York, uh, didn’t go that well, and now Adams is looking for his next gig. The Packers desperately need a reliable #1 wide receiver – just ask Josh Jacobs – and while I’m not super sure that actually applies to Adams anymore, his name’s still synonymous with that level of production.
Plus, you know, it’s a fun story! Back in Green Bay to finish his career, ushering a new era of elite pass-catchers. The narrative basically wrote itself. Unfortunately, a stupid thing called “American currency” may get in the way of that dream.

In a recent article written on ESPN, NFL analyst Bill Barnwell tries to project what certain free agents’ markets will look like in a few weeks, and the group he included Adams in comes with a BIG OL’ number.

And here’s what Barnwell had to say about Adams earlier this month:
“Adams is still a useful player. He’s just not worth nearly $36 million per season, and that’s going to bring an end to his time with the Jets, given that the primary reason they dragged Adams to New York will be hitting the road.”
Welpppppp. The whole point of bringing Adams in was that they didn’t have to pay him close to $30 million. And even the lighter side of that salary range is probably nowhere near where the Packers are interested in going. I’m a little surprised to learn that Barnwell thinks that Adams will be in the same ballpark with Tee Higgins – who’s six years younger – but NFL teams do have a way of overpaying for the name in free agency, so who knows?
Maybe this is all just the Packers working behind the scenes to throw off potential other teams that are pursuing Adams. Maybe they already have a handshake agreement (hypothetically, of course) and nothing I just wrote about matters at all. That’s my story for the next two weeks, and I’m sticking to it.
