Nice streak, Falvey. A recent survey identified Twins fans as being the second-least patient in MLB. They lose faith in the team when a losing streak reaches six games. MLB average is nine. Do something, Rocco!
Here’s something you probably know already: It doesn’t take much for Minnesota Twins fans to lose confidence in their team.
Aside from various ownership faux pas, roster transactions gone sideways, and perceptively questionable decisions made by the coaching staff, it takes a regular-season losing streak lasting less than a week to make Twins fans emotionally jump ship.
Six straight losses — that’s it — before Twins fans “lose faith” in the team. Way to hang with the home team, boys and girls! If they don’t win for six games in a row, it’s a shame.
Confirmation comes via a survey by sports platform PromoGuy, which earlier this month asked 2,000 baseball fans across the United States what it takes, in terms of regular-season disappointment, to activate a negative change in disposition.
A six-game streak makes sense for Twins fans, though, because the most recent time they lost a sixth straight game came when Cleveland’s Will Brennan hit a game-ending three-run homer against Jhoan Duran on May 19. A depressing time, for sure.
Minnesota’s losing streak reached a season-high seven the next day against Washington, but by then, Twins fans had checked out.
Fans of the Chicago White Sox (sheesh), Colorado Rockies and Miami Marlins also draw the line at six straight losses. Kindred spirits with Sox fans; that has to make your day.
The only fans showing less patience than Twins fans are those of the former Oakland Athletics, who after skipping town now are slated to play home games in West Sacramento, Calif. until Las Vegas finds a permanent ballpark. When the A’s drop five straight, fans say the team can go to heck, West Sacto — wherever.
Major league average for losing faith is nine straight losses.
The most patient folks are Tampa Bay Rays fans, who are always under constant threat of relocation. What’s a little losing to them? Anything up to 13 straight.
Other patient fanbases include those who like the Baltimore Orioles, cool up to 12 losses in a row.
Cleveland Guardians fans and San Francisco Giants are good up to 11 straight losses. Keeping it in the AL Central, the Detroit Tigers can lose 10 straight before their fans lose it.
Six straight games isn’t so many, Twins fans. The White Sox lost 21 straight, an AL record, in 2024. It probably seemed like they lost every single day, though.
The Twins franchise record for most consecutive losses in the regular season is 18, done on three occasions if you include the Washington Senators history before the club moved to the Twin Cities.
It’s only 14 straight losses within the confines of Minnesota. (Remember how there was no smoking in the Metrodome?
Well in 1982 there wasn’t a lot of winning, either.) Then again, the Twins once lost 18 straight playoff games, so maybe baseball is trying to tell us that the 18-game thing counts.
Did fans regain their postseason faith because that streak ended in 2023? For a couple of days, sure.
