Luis Robert Jr. trade looming? What Chicago White Sox’s latest signing reveals

The Chicago White Sox can only go up from here, right? After losing a record 121 games in 2024 — the worst season in modern MLB history — the outlook for 2025 remains bleak.

The White Sox have already traded their ace Garrett Crochet to the Boston Red Sox, and All-Star outfielder Luis Robert Jr.’s name continues to surface in trade rumors.

Robert, who made the All-Star team in 2023, has seen injuries plague his young career. He’s coming off his worst season, hitting .224 with 14 home runs, posting a .657 OPS and 87 OPS+ in 100 games.

While Robert remains the White Sox’s best MLB asset, the team isn’t willing to accept a subpar deal just to move his $15 million salary for the 2025 season. His contract includes two club options at $20 million each for 2026 and 2027.

The recent signing of veteran centerfielder Michael A. Taylor to a one-year deal has intensified trade speculation, as Taylor plays the same position as Robert. However, White Sox general manager Chris Getz attempted to quiet the rumors.

“The expectation is he’s going to be our Opening Day center fielder,” Getz told reporters, via CHGO Sports, referring to Robert. “He’s had a really productive offseason, and we have to find ways to keep him on the field. We know what he’s capable of doing when he’s healthy. And we look forward to handling him in a way that he can be on the Opening Day roster and he can be the productive player we’re accustomed to seeing.”

Despite Getz’s comments, he didn’t completely shut down trade possibilities. The Taylor signing gives the White Sox a ready replacement in centerfield if they decide to move Robert.

It’s difficult to envision Robert finishing the 2025 season in Chicago. If he’s not dealt during spring training, he’ll likely be moved by the trade deadline. The risk in waiting, however, is clear: if Robert suffers another injury, the White Sox’s chance to upgrade their farm system could vanish.
