Pittsburgh Steelers Have Disagreement On Justin Fields With Mike Tomlin: Report

Pittsburgh Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers have an important decision to make at quarterback before free agency starts in March. The team is expected to decide between bringing back Justin Fields or Russell Wilson in 2025.

The Steelers signed Fields and Wilson to one-year deals in 2024. Fields led Pittsburgh’s to a 4-2 start before Wilson took over the starting position after dealing with a calf injury to start the season.

The Steelers made the playoffs but suffered an early exit to the Baltimore Ravens 28-14 in the wild card round. The Steelers lost five games in a row to end the campaign. Wilson made a Pro Bowl appearance for his efforts in 2024.

Steelers owner Art Rooney II recently said he thinks the team will have to decide between Fields or Wilson.

Per ESPN‘s Jeremy Fowler, people in the Steelers building prefer Fields over Wilson. However, Tomlin has a “loyalty” to Wilson.

“I’ve seen a bunch of ex-Steelers players here in New Orleans, many of whom are well-versed in Steelers happenings., Fowler wrote. “They told me that some people in Pittsburgh’s building prefer Fields over Russell Wilson — who is also a free agent — as the starter (which I had heard previously), due to age and mobility. Coach Mike Tomlin seems to have a loyalty to Wilson that could lead the team in that direction, though.

“Plus, Fields could have a sneaky good market and price himself out of Pittsburgh. Wilson loved his season in Pittsburgh and is open to returning but is taking a see-what-happens approach to it all.”

Wilson has been connected to several other teams in recent weeks, including the Las Vegas Raiders and former head coach, Pete Carroll. Wilson has said he’s focused on the Steelers.

One would assume the Steelers would ultimately decide to give the team what Tomlin wants.
