NFL Player Robert Rochell Files Lawsuit After Career-Altering Car Crash

Green Bay Packers cornerback Robert Rochell has filed a lawsuit in response to a 2023 car crash that reportedly affected his abilities as a football player.

The suit, filed in Los Angeles County and obtained by TMZ, outlines what happened while Rochell was on the Los Angeles Rams roster in February 2023. Rochell was reportedly driving his Mercedes on the highway when he was hit by a speeding car, leaving him badly injured. He listed various injuries including a fractured elbow, nerve damage, pain in his knee and head, and other bumps and bruises.

The Rams were coming off a victory in the Super Bowl that year, which Rochell said he played a key role in. “[Rochell] played significant snaps in his rookie year and in the playoffs and Super Bowl, where he won a ring. Coming off of this incredibly successful rookie year, [Rochell] was primed to become a major contributor on defense and perhaps even a starter,” the suit said.

The crash, Rochell said, ended up derailing his burgeoning football career at the time. He had to take some time off from the field and was cut from the Rams later that year. He went on to play on the practice squads for the Seattle Seahawks, Carolina Panthers, and Green Bay Packers, ultimately signing on to the Packers roster. He’s seeking an unspecified amount of damages for the time spent recovering.

“[Rochell] lost millions of dollars of earnings and substantial momentum in his NFL career,” the lawsuit said, as he seeks compensation for his “loss of earning capacity” during that time.

It remains to be seen what the driver that night may end up having to pay.
