Boston Red Sox Predicted to Reunite With Former Top Prospect in Free Agency

After finishing last year 81-81 and missing the playoffs, the Boston Red Sox could use some help in free agency.

Two areas they could use help with are in the infield and adding another right-handed bat. More specifically, the middle infield needs an addition.

A Bleacher Report article from Joel Reuter predicted every MLB team’s Opening Day lineup next season. Reuter predicted Boston would address those needs by signing former top prospect Jose Iglesias to hit seventh in the order and play second base.

Iglesias is an interesting fit for the team as currently constructed. Now 35 years old, his prospect days with the Red Sox are long gone. He last played for Boston in 2021, appearing in 23 games.

However, current top infield prospects Kristian Campbell and Marcelo Mayer could use more time in the minor leagues, making Iglesias a great bridge option.

New York Mets second base Jose Iglesias hits a single in the second inning during game four of the NLCS.

He is a plus defender, has versatility in the infield, and is a solid right-handed bat, making him an intriguing and affordable option for Boston in the short term.

By no means would he be a splashy signing like the Red Sox adding Alex Bregman, but Iglesias could serve as a solid alternative and not block the path of some upcoming top prospects.

The Red Sox have shown a pattern of not paying top money for players lately. Signing someone like Iglesias might be more realistic.

Fans may not want to hear that, but they may be better off preparing themselves for a youth movement in the coming years rather than signing or trading for big names.
