The Chiefs on Sunday clinched their third consecutive Super Bowl appearance, but not without a little controversy.
Kansas City benefited from a very questionable call early in the fourth quarter of the AFC Championship Game. Facing a fourth-and-inches from the Chiefs’ 41-yard line, Bills star Josh Allen ran a quarterback sneak with Buffalo up by one and appeared to cross the line to gain.
But the referees thought otherwise and Kansas City marched down to score a go-ahead touchdown after the turnovers on downs at Arrowhead Stadium.
The call wasn’t a complete backbreaker for the Bills, who returned serve on the ensuing drive and knotted the game at 29-29. But after Patrick Mahomes and company secured a 32-29 win, it was tough not to look back at the game-altering decision by the officials.
Former New England Patriots tight end Benjamin Watson, a Super Bowl XXXIX champion, certainly did. But he also didn’t take any credit from the two-time defending champs.
“Incredible game,” Watson posted to X. “That awful spot by the officials was inexcusable but these two teams played like champions. Chiefs are in a class by themselves. They find a way every year. Unflappable.”
Allen similarly didn’t strip Kansas City of any credit. The star signal-caller saluted Steve Spagnuolo’s defense for playing the sneak well.
