Update: Twins former top prospect having dominant stretch after early-season struggles

Despite their overall struggles lately, the Twins have been receiving much-needed offensive production from one of their infielders.

Twins former top prospect Brooks Lee has been on an offensive tear lately for Minnesota

Lee, who missed the first 15 games of the season with a lumbar strain, started his season hitting .237/.274/.348 in 146 plate appearances across 39 games. Despite Lee’s early-season struggles, manager Rocco Baldelli remained confident in the infielder, keeping him in the lineup consistently and praising him publicly.

Baldelli’s faith in Lee has led to a recent breakout

Baldelli’s trust in Lee, MLB Pipeline’s No. 18 prospect pre-2024, has paid off lately. Lee collected three hits, including a solo home run, in the Twins’ 2-1 loss against the Astros on Sunday. He has slashed .357/.379/.554 with three homers, two of which came in the series against Houston last weekend, in his last 15 games. He notched a hit in every one of those 15 games.

Lee, 24, had a rough rookie season in 2024, posting a .221/.265/.320 batting line in 185 plate appearances. The Twins never demoted Lee after his call-up to the majors on July 3, 2024, and fans are now seeing why. He can play solid defense at shortstop, second base and third base, hit from both sides of the plate and maintains a low strikeout rate.

The Twins need more players on the team to start performing up to Lee’s recent level of play if they want to remain in postseason contention. Minnesota has lost eight of its last 10 games, which has led to it losing its hold on an AL Wild Card spot. With the poor game results and various devastating injuries for the Twins, at least Lee is giving fans something to be excited about.

Twins head to Cincinnati to face Reds

The Minnesota Twins and Cincinnati Reds are set to square off in a three-game series this week at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, Ohio. Game 1 is scheduled to start at 6:10 p.m. CT on Tuesday, featuring probably starting pitchers righty David Festa and lefty Andrew Abbot.
