It took the Green Bay Packers more than one season to find an adequate replacement for franchise all-time leading scorer Mason Crosby.
After Green Bay decided not to bring Crosby back following the 2022 NFL season, they selected Anders Carlson in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft to be their new kicker.
Unfortunately, it was a disaster.
Carlson led the NFL in missed kicks while making just 81.8% of his field goals and 87.2% of his extra kicks.
Neither he nor veteran Greg Joseph, whom the Packers signed to add competition to the position, performed well in training camp or the preseason of 2024. Both were released in favor of Brayden Narveson, who had been waived by the Tennessee Titans.
The Green Bay Packers Signed Brandon McManus to Replace Brayden Narveson
Narveson, however, turned out to be a major disappointment. In six games with the Packers, he made all of his extra point attempts (something Carlson struggled with), but barely made 70% of his field goals.
With no time to waste on being patient with yet another young struggling kicker, the Packers went out and signed free agent Brandon McManus, who previously had been released by the Washington Commanders due to a lawsuit brought against him by former female employees of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
McManus and his lawyer “resolved” the suit, and the Packers felt comfortable bringing him aboard. And it was a good thing, too.
McManus ended up having the second-best single season field goal percentage in franchise history in his 11 games with Green Bay.
He made a career-best 95.2% of his field goals and 100% of his extra points, though he did miss a short kick in the Packers’ Wild Card loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Soon, he will be a free agent again, and there is not guarantee that he will return to Green Bay.
The Green Bay Packers Signed Alex Hale to a Futures Contract
With the future of the kicker position, once again, uncertain, the Packers wanted to ensure that they had at least one on their roster with whom they have worked.
According to their website, Green Bay signed Alex Hale to a futures contract, which ensures that he will be on their 90 man roster up until they have to trim it to 53.
Hale, a native of Australia, spent the 2024 NFL season on the Packers’ practice squad as part of the International Player Pathway.
Because of this, he did not count towards the 16-player limit.
Hale went to college at Oklahoma State where he made 79.6% of his field goals and 95.9% of his extra points in five seasons.
After going undrafted in 2024, Green Bay signed him as a free agent before releasing him and then adding him to the practice squad.
