Just after their final game of the regular season, the New England Patriots fired Jerod Mayo, who was in his first season as their head coach, in a move that surprised people.
But now, they have an experienced head coach in Mike Vrabel, whom they hired on Sunday.
Patriots fans have little to be happy or excited about these days, but Vrabel is a proven coach and was perhaps the hottest head coaching candidate on the market, and he told those fans that he and his staff will put a product on the field they can be proud of.
Vrabel, like Mayo, was once a Pro Bowl linebacker for the Patriots during their dynastic years.
He played for them from 2001 to 2008 after spending his first four seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and he won three Super Bowl championships with Tom Brady and crew while making the Pro Bowl during the 2007 season.
That year, he posted 12.5 sacks, 17 quarterback hits and nine tackles for loss and was also voted onto the All-Pro First Team.
As a coach, Vrabel was known for maximizing the underwhelming talent on the Tennessee Titans, the team he was the head coach for from 2018 to 2023.
In his second year there, he guided them to a big upset win over league MVP Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens in the divisional round.
Now, he will be tasked with the job of turning a Patriots team that has been in the wilderness ever since Brady left following the 2019 season into winners once again, but they will need to get him several reinforcements this offseason for that to happen.
