It appears that there are actually some legs on the never-ending speculation about Deion Sanders potentially becoming the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.

During the 2024 NCAA football and NFL season, countless fans and analysts floated the idea of Deion Sanders potentially replacing Mike McCarthy as the Cowboys head coach. And it actually makes some sense for several reasons.

For one, you won’t find two men who crave the spotlight and embrace attention as much as “Coach Prime” and Dallas owner Jones. And of course, Sanders played for the Cowboys from 1995 to 1999 and led them to a Super Bowl 30 championship.

Now, ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Jordan Schultz of FOX Sports both report that Jerry Jones has spoken to Deion Sanders about the Cowboys’ HC opening:

Deion Sanders and Jerry Jones have spoken about the Cowboys’ head coaching job, as @Schultz_Report reported. Their talks will continue.

Deion Sanders has long publicly dismissed any interest in coaching in the NFL — but this was one call he wasn’t going to ignore. Sanders is listening, and talks are expected to continue as Jerry Jones explores the possibility of bringing Coach Prime to the NFL, per multiple… https://t.co/D9z3OYqWF4 pic.twitter.com/iN0vPLOwgk

Speaking on ESPN during halftime of the Los Angeles Rams-Minnesota Vikings Wild Card Round game:

“They have spoken with amongst other candidates, Deion Sanders. There is a mutual interest there. I go back to a year and a half ago when I had a former general manager say to me ‘Watch Deion Sanders. There’s a real possibility he may be the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.’ Well, there is mutual interest. We’ll see if that amps up but the two sides have talked, have touched base.”

After leading Jackson State to consecutive SWAP Championships in 2021 and 2022, Deion Sanders joined the Colorado Buffaloes on a lucrative long-term contract.

After going 4-8 in his first year, Coach Prime guided the Buffs to an 8-4 record that ended with a loss to BYU in the Alamo Bowl.

Deion Sanders Going To Cowboys Would Be Something Else

If you love drama, headlines and frontpage stories, then you probably love the idea of Sanders becoming the Cowboys’ next head coach.

But if you’re a Dallas fan that wants Jones to make the right hire, you probably don’t want Coach Prime here.

Sanders has no NFL coaching experience. He needs to further build up his resume at the college ranks, especially with Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter entering the 2025 NFL Draft.

Simply put, hiring Sanders right away would prove that Jones is more worried about publicity than championships.
