Who will be the team’s QB in 2025?
Both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields looked good at times for Pittsburgh throughout the 2024 season. Neither are under contract beyond this season and it would be surprising to see both back. There is a case that could be made for either to be the team’s option moving forward. Wilson has the pedigree and overall success throughout his career, but he is 36 years old now and is more of a short-term option.
Fields is just 25 years old and could be a long-term answer, but is he better than Wilson now? There also will be other quarterbacks available this offseason but it does seem like these two are the most likely options for 2025. It’s going to be a tough decision, but luckily we don’t have to make it.
Bleacher Report’s Erik Beaston predicted that Wilson will end up being back in 2025 on the transition tag.
“Russell Wilson is an interesting case in that he played well enough to get another look from Pittsburgh in 2025 but not great enough to make anyone who supports the black and yellow believe he is the guy to get them over the hump and back to the Super Bowl,” Beaston said. “The team can apply a transition tag to Wilson, which gives it the right to match any offer that comes his way. It is cheaper than applying a traditional franchise tag and allows the Steelers to explore other quarterback options.
“Especially with Justin Fields also hitting free agency this year. With no other obvious suitor for Wilson, the former Seattle Seahawk and Denver Bronco may be best off staying with Pittsburgh as the team at least has the look and feel of a playoff contender again next season. Prediction: Wilson stays in Pittsburgh on a transition tag.”
This seems like a pretty fair prediction and one that wouldn’t break the bank. But, it also wouldn’t solve the team’s quarterback questions for the future.
