When the Green Bay Packers were put in a position where they had to trade All-Pro wide receiver Davante Adams after the 2021 NFL season, it left them with a glaring hole at the position. Marquez Valdes-Scantling was also allowed to leave in free agency, leaving Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb as the only two reliable pass catchers at the position.
In an effort to replace those two wide receivers, Green Bay did what they typically do when multiple players at one position leave: they add a free agent and draft multiple players. In this instance, they signed Sammy Watkins, who of course did not complete the 2022 season with the Packers.
They also used three of their 11 picks in the 2022 NFL Draft on wide receivers: Christian Watson (second round), Romeo Doubs (fourth round), and Samori Toure (seventh round).
Former Green Bay Packers Wide Receiver Samori Toure Became the Odd Man Out
As a rookie, playing behind Lazard, Watkins, Watson, and Doubs, the former seventh round pick did not see the field often. Toure played just 16% of the offensive snaps in the 11 games in which he appeared, and played even fewer on special teams.
He ended his first season in the NFL with five receptions for 82 yards and a touchdown.
The following year, 2023, saw the Packers bid adieu to quarterback Aaron Rodgers, Lazard, and Cobb. They also drafted three more wide receivers to grow and develop with new starting quarterback Jordan Love. They selected Jayden Reed in the second round, Dontayvion Wicks in the fifth round, and Grant DuBose in the seventh round.
Additionally, the Packers signed Malik Heath as an undrafted free agent and added Bo Melton.
Stuck behind a logjam of young wide receivers, Toure again did not see the field much in his second season. He finished the year with eight receptions for 78 yards.
After training camp of 2024, Toure was informed that he was not going to make the 53-man roster and was released.
Former Green Bay Packers Wide Receiver Samori Toure Signed a Futures Contract with the Chicago Bears
After being cut by the Packers, Toure was signed by the Chicago Bears and added to their practice squad. He spent the entire season there, never being elevated for a single game despite their woeful 5-12 season.
On Monday, it was announced that the Bears had signed Toure to a futures contract, along with several other players they want on their 90-man roster:
The Bears signed the following 9 players to futures contracts
OL Theo Benedet
OL Chris Glaser
WR John Jackson
LB Carl Jones
DL Jamree Kromah
QB Austin Reed
OL Ricky Stromberg
WR Samori Toure
TE Joel Wilson— Courtney Cronin (@CourtneyRCronin) January 6, 2025
Interestingly, the last name on that list, tight end Joel Wilson, is also a former Packer.
