“A Significant Part Of That Unit’s Improvement”: Green Bay Packers Rookie Safety Evan Williams Named To CBS All-Rookie Team

Green Bay Packers rookie safety Evan Williams has made an impact on the team ever since the day he was drafted into the organization. He was a fourth-round selection (111th overall pick) in the 2024 NFL Draft from the Oregon Ducks. Williams is 5’11” and weighs 200 lbs.

During training camp, he was making plays and it was one of the reasons why he saw the field a lot during his rookie season. Green Bay also drafted another safety in the 2024 NFL Draft in the second round by taking Javon Bullard from Georgia.

Jared Dubin of CBS Sports created his all-rookie team for the 2024 season on the offensive side and defensive side of the football. At the safety position, Evan Williams of the Green Bay Packers made it to the all-rookie team. Williams and Xavier McKinney have made an impact at the safety position for the Packers’ defense this season. Dubin said:

“Williams’ partnership with Xavier McKinney on the back of Green Bay’s defense has been a significant part of that unit’s improvement this year. And his absence was felt in a big way against the Vikings this past weekend, as Minnesota destroyed the Packers with passes over the middle of the field.”

Williams currently has a quadriceps injury and he did not practice on Thursday. It will be interesting to see if he will play against the Chicago Bears’ defense or not. However, Williams and Xavier McKinney could very well be one of the best safety tandems in the entire NFL.

Season Stats

This season, the former Oregon Ducks safety has recorded 49 tackles, one forced fumble, one interception, and three pass deflections. Those numbers are very good for a safety that is only a rookie in the NFL. It appears as if the Packers will have a solid tandem of Williams and Xavier McKinney over the next several seasons.

What they will need to do next is to find more help at the cornerback position. Green Bay is very deep in the safety position. Also, the other safety to make the CBS all-rookie team other than Evan Williams was Kamren Kinchens of the Los Angeles Rams.
