FRISCO – The Dallas Cowboys have just one game to go before the season’s end, meaning to a conclusion to a year filled with calamity and riddled with frustration.
Dallas missed the playoffs for the first time in three seasons and will have to reevaluate several areas of their roster. But perhaps the most significant oncoming decision does not involve any athlete and instead revolves around the head coach.
The future of Mike McCarthy remains a mystery as the offseason draws near and the coaching carousel ramps up. Frankly, the totality of McCarthy’s 2024 campaign has not done him any favors.
An embarrassing early exit from the NFC Wild Card last January coupled with single digits in the win column should make him a shaky candidate to man his post once again. However, the overwhelming abundance of injuries crippled the Cowboys’ hopes essentially from the start and the team has since rallied around McCarthy.
Ultimately, Jerry Jones and his team will get the final say, but should they employ the advice of their franchise quarterback?
Dak Prescott has a strong relationship with McCarthy and has worked well with him over the course of their five-year partnership.
“It’s tough to probably get your job done and do your job with all that hanging over your head,” Prescott said, triggered into reaction to the rumors. “
But credit to him, credit to his professionalism and really his coach’s style of being able to get guys being ready to play and go out there and finish and take pride in what we finish and what we put on tape.”
The Cowboys made Prescott the highest paid player in NFL history, so there has to be some value in how he views things at The Star.
He is now into his 30’s and his best years are likely left in the tenure of the extension he signed in September. If he feels bringing back McCarthy gives him the best chance to maintain his powers and have the Cowboys best positioned to contend for a championship, Jerry should take that into consideration.
