The season for the Dallas Cowboys is pretty much a lost cause at this point. After yet another blowout loss, this time to the Texans on Monday Night Football, they’re now 3-7.
Dak Prescott is on Injured Reserve after having hamstring surgery, meaning that Cooper Rush is currently the team’s starter. Rush is struggling, and some think they should turn to 2021 third-overall pick Trey Lance.
Lance was acquired from the team that drafted him, the San Francisco 49ers, during the preseason last season for a fourth-round pick. The North Dakota State alum only played on year as a starter in college, lighting up the FCS in 2019 with over 3,800 total yards, 42 total touchdowns, and no interceptions.
But, due to COVID, injuries, and sitting behind Jimmy Garoppolo, he’s only attempted 138 passes in competitive football since that 2019 season.
Some think that the potential is still there. After all, the 49ers were ready for Lance to be their franchise quarterback until he had a serious ankle injury early in the 2022 season. That allowed Brock Purdy to win the job in his absence, hence the team moving on from Lance.
And, his college film is honestly pretty good.
Lance showed some flashes in the preseason this year in extended action, but threw five interceptions in a single preseason game this year against the Chargers.
If you read into this comment by owner/GM Jerry Jones on Tuesday following another subpar performance by Cooper Rush, it seems like the Cowboys have absolutely no confidence in Trey Lance whatsoever.
To me, that reads like the Cowboys have absolutely no faith in Trey Lance at all. If they’re not going to give him a chance even with Cooper Rush playing really poor football, that means he’s showing absolutely nothing in practice.
They won’t say that outloud, because that would mean they would have to admit that trading for him was a mistake. But, if you read between the lines, I think you’ll get the right idea.
