‘I Think It’s Some BS’: Drake Maye Claps Back at Jerod Mayo’s Critics – Can the Patriots Pull Off a Christmas Miracle?

Following Sunday’s loss in Buffalo, the rookie quarterback defended Jerod Mayo and the Patriots coaching staff, which has come under fire from fans and media in New England.

“Just trying to block out that noise. I think it’s a bunch of conversations about our coaching staff and stuff like that. I think it’s some BS to be quite honest,” Maye said.

The Patriots quarterback was emphatic in his support for Mayo and offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, both of whom have been the targets of heavy criticism throughout the 2024 season.

One does not need to look far to find those who think the Patriots need to make a change (or several) on the coaching staff moving forward. However, team ownership is reportedly on course to bring Mayo back in 2025.

You can also count the franchise quarterback among those who support the job the staff is doing.

“Coach Mayo, like I said, we got his back,” Maye said. “He’s coached us hard. He wants to win. We all want to win and we’re all frustrated. AVP’s been, I feel like, calling great the past weeks. We’re just plays away.”

The Patriots put together one of their best halves of the season Sunday against the Bills, taking a 14-7 lead into halftime. However, the wheels came off in the second half with the Patriots turning the ball over three times.

Maye was directly involved in two of those turnovers. The first was an ill-advised pass that was picked off in the end zone. The second was a complete mess of a play where Maye threw a backward pass to Rhamondre Stevenson — only for it to be dropped and recovered for a Buffalo touchdown.

Maye put the blame on himself for the turnovers. In the process, the praised the rest of the team for keeping up the fight even though the season has gotten away from them.

“Iit’s just a testament to these guys that we keep fighting. We keep fighting. We’re not gonna make the playoffs. We’re out of the race. These guys are coming in. They’re frustrated we don’t score. They got energy at practice. They got energy coming to the game,” Maye said.

“We want to win. There’s guy’s not even playing that are yelling on the sidelines and willing to win. I think we’re building something good, building something that feels right here and I’m proud to be a Patriot,” Maye added.
