Report: Steelers didn’t place waiver claim for WR Diontae Johnson

The former Steelers receiver finds himself on another playoff-bound AFC team.

One of the biggest questions of the week was whether or not the Steelers would attempt to reunite with former Pittsburgh wide receiver Diontae Johnson following his falling out with the Baltimore Ravens. According to ESPN’s Field Yates, the Steelers did not place a claim for Johnson after the receiver was placed on waivers over the weekend.

Instead, Johnson finds himself on the Houston Texans following Tank Dell’s season-ending injury. The only other team to place a claim for him was the Los Angeles Chargers. Both teams are ahead of Pittsburgh in the waiver order.

Johnson was traded from the Steelers to the Panthers this offseason amid rumors of drama in Pittsburgh. Carolina then traded him midseason to the Ravens, where Johnson never found a role on offense. He was waived the day before the Steelers played Baltimore, with many speculating the timing was so he couldn’t play against his former team should Pittsburgh claim him.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin didn’t give much of an answer when asked about claiming Johnson following the Ravens game.

Now a Texan, there’s a good chance Johnson plays one of his former teams in January, as the Steelers or Ravens could face Houston in the playoffs. If he plays this week, he’ll also get to face Baltimore in the regular season as the Texans and Ravens play on Christmas Day.
