Five players who missed the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 34-17 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday could return this week against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Time, though, isn’t on their side with the Steelers facing the Chiefs in a Christmas matchup at Acrisure Stadium.
The quick turnaround also is a reason coach Mike Tomlin listed two players injured in the 17-point loss — cornerback Joey Porter and wide receiver Ben Skowronek — as questionable to return when the Steelers play again Wednesday.
Porter left with a knee injury — it originally was ruled an issue with his calf — and Skowronek, a special teams contributor as well, injured his hip. Both players returned briefly in the second half before exiting for good.
“I just don’t have a lot of new information on those guys given that we just played last night,” Tomlin said Sunday at his weekly news conference. “We’re still in the process of assessing those things. Anybody that did make it out of that stadium yesterday on a four-day turnaround is probably going to have a difficult time showing for this one.”
The game will be the third for the Steelers (10-5) in an 11-day span. The Steelers faced the Ravens — on the road — six days after a 27-13 loss at Philadelphia.
They will have just one full day of practice — and a walk-through Tuesday — to prepare for the Chiefs, who have crafted a 14-1 record on the heels of winning back-to-back Super Bowl championships.
“It’s about their health,” Tomlin said. “There’s not going to be a lot of physical opportunity for anybody to display readiness on a short week. It’s really about them getting a clean bill of health and us being able to forecast the number of snaps they can take from a conditioning perspective or a health perspective.”
Wide receiver George Pickens has missed three games with a hamstring injury. Defensive lineman Larry Ogunjobi (groin) and safety DeShon Elliott (hamstring) have missed the past two games. Backup quarterback Justin Fields (abdomen) and cornerback Donte Jackson (back) were injured in the Eagles game and were inactive against the Ravens.
“They have a real chance,” Tomlin said. “All will have an opportunity to play this week. We’ll see where the week leads us.”
Where’s Najee?
On the heels of a game in which he played a career-low 14 snaps, running back Najee Harris logged just 17 against the Ravens. That is the second-lowest number in his four-year career. He never had played fewer than 20 snaps in a game until the past two weeks.
Harris was limited to nine touches — all carries— against the Ravens. He had seven against the Eagles.
Jaylen Warren, meantime, played 40 snaps against Baltimore after being on the field for 23 plays at Philadelphia.
Warren had a team-high 12 carries and 17 touches Saturday.
With the Steelers amid those three games in 11 days, Tomlin wanted to keep his running backs fresh.
“It was the flow of the game,” Tomlin said. “We had every intention of being inclusive and utilizing all our backs. We wanted to use all three guys. Jaylen got a heck of a lot more than the others based on game circumstances when he was in, and (it was) the general flow of the game.”
Bouncing back
Tomlin isn’t concerned that quarterback Russell Wilson turned the ball over twice in a game for the first time since last December when he was with Denver. Or that Wilson is coming off back-to-back games with a sub.-100 passer rating.
“I expect him to respond,” Tomlin said. “He’s been doing this a long time.”
Wilson accepted blame for his fumble that cost the Steelers a potential touchdown and a pick-6 that extended Baltimore’s lead to 31-17 early in the fourth quarter.
“He’s tough on himself because he’s got a desire to be great,” Tomlin said. “He wants to lead us to victory. He owns that. I don’t expect that to be an issue in terms of his readiness or trajectory of this week.”
Wilson has committed multiple turnovers just 33 times in his 197 career games during the regular season. He has a 22-9 record the week after those multi-turnover games, with the other instance happening in a season finale.
Mum is the word
Tomlin’s press conference ended with a question about a potential reunion with wide receiver Dionte Johnson, who is on waivers after being let go by Baltimore and will be a free agent if he goes unclaimed Monday.
Tomlin had no interest in the topic.
“I have nothing to add about somebody that is not on our football team right now,” he said.
