Former Green Bay Packers Head Coach Mike McCarthy On Hot Seat Now That Cowboys Eliminated From NFL Playoffs

The Green Bay Packers experienced a high level of success under former head coach Mike McCarthy. Of course, everyone remembers how he led the Packers to victory in Super Bowl XLV, an achievement that got a street named after him in Green Bay.

McCarthy also oversaw the transition from one Hall of Fame quarterback, Brett Favre, to another in Aaron Rodgers. Of course, no one knew at the time that Rodgers was going to be as great he was. McCarthy handled the entire situation with as much grace and professionalism that one could have asked for.

Unfortunately, the 2018 Packers got off to a 4-7-1 start after finishing 7-9 in 2017. With tension growing between McCarthy and Rodgers, Green Bay made the decision to fire their head coach before the season ended.

After being fired by Green Bay and replaced by Matt LaFleur, McCarthy took a year off from coaching. Following the 2019 season, he was hired to be the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.

The Cowboys were just 6-10 in McCarthy’s first year as head coach, though the loss of quarterback Dak Prescott after just five games played a major role in their struggles.

From 2021-2023, however, McCarthy led Dallas to 12 wins each year. Unfortunately, his struggles in the NFL Playoffs which plagued him in his latter years in Green Bay followed him to the Cowboys. Despite three consecutive postseason berths, Dallas has a 1-3 playoff record under McCarthy.

This season has been an absolute disaster for McCarthy and the Cowboys. After making Prescott the highest-paid quarterback in NFL history and giving CeeDee Lamb the second-richest contract ever for a wide receiver, Dallas stumbled out of the block this season.

Of course, owner/general manager Jerry Jones did not do his head coach any favors. Even though they locked up their two best offensive players, Dallas failed to sign a decent running back and put together a ragtag group of offensive linemen to protect their quarterback.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Prescott ended up hurt again and saw his season end after just eight games.

Prior to the 2024 season, Jones decided not to give McCarthy a contract extension, though publicly expressed faith in his head coach’s ability to lead the team. This year, though, is the final season in his contract. Once 2024 is over, he could be looking for a new job.

Based on the Cowboys’ struggles in the NFL Playoffs and their poor performance this season, many believe this may be the end of the line for McCarthy in Dallas. With the Washington Commanders beating the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, the Cowboys have been mathematically eliminated from the postseason for the first time in three years.

McCarthy may not make it to the end of the season if Jones feels like he wants to move on at this point.
