While we were thinking about position-player availability with a trio of players nursing injuries, the Dodgers added to its bullpen on Monday, selecting right-hander Julian Fernández from Triple-A Oklahoma City ahead of their series opener against the Brewers in Milwaukee.
The position player move was Kiké Hernández to the injured list with left elbow inflammation, and outfielder James Outman called up from Triple-A.
Fernández last pitched in the majors in 2021, appearing in six games for the Rockies. Since then he’s been in Triple-A with the Rockies, Blue Jays, and now Dodgers, with a 2024 stint with Veracruz in the Mexican League last season.
The Dodgers signed Fernández to a minor league contract on January 6, which included a non-roster invitation to spring training.
The 29-year-old right-hander had a 4.08 ERA in 24 games for Oklahoma City, with 32 strikeouts and 10 walks in 28⅔ innings. Five of his 13 runs allowed came in his second game of the season, and in the three months since Fernández has a 2.30 ERA, 20.4 strikeout-minus-walk rate, and one home run allowed.
Ten of Fernández’s 24 appearances with the Comets have lasted longer than one inning, including five games of at least two frames, topping out at 2⅔ innings. He last pitched on Thursday, tossing 1⅓ scoreless frames with two strikeouts in Las Vegas.
Justin Wrobleski was optioned, the odd man out at least for this week with Tyler Glasnow set to be activated during the road trip, perhaps as soon as Wednesday in Milwaukee.
Wrobleski had a solid month-long stint in the majors beginning with what was supposed to be a spot start on June 6 in St. Louis. In six games, a combination of starting and bulk relief, Wrobleski had a 3.48 ERA with 32 strikeouts against only seven walks in 31 innings.
He took the loss on Saturday against Houston, allowing five runs (four earned) in 4⅔ innings, with six strikeouts and a walk.
To make room on the 40-man roster for Fernández, infielder/outfielder CJ Alexander was designated for assignment just four days after he was claimed off waivers. In two games with Oklahoma City, one at first base and the other as designated hitter, Alexander had one hit in seven at-bats plus a walk.
If Fernández gets into a game, he’d be the 35th pitcher used by the team this season. Entering Monday, the Dodgers’ 34 pitchers used are second-most in the majors, one shy of the Mets.
